“Nel 1956, Colonia è una città in totale ricostruzione. Le cicatrici della seconda guerra mondiale sono appena guarite quando l’Europa ricomincia a dividersi: est contro ovest.
Di fronte all’enorme danno causato da guerre e ideologie, come è possibile ripristinare la fiducia dei giovani nel futuro? Come salvare questo grande patrimonio europeo, sepolto sotto le macerie? Come rimetterlo nelle mani di un giovane alla ricerca delle radici e di un futuro?
Preoccupati per questi problemi, una trentina di giovani si riuniscono a Colonia.
Tra questi, ci sono cattolici, protestanti e un ortodosso.
Per loro è urgente riportare Dio al centro di un progetto europeo.
In quella prospettiva, hanno creato la Federazione dello Scautismo Europeo (FSE), una fratellanza internazionale che mira a educare bambini e giovani attraverso la pratica tradizionale dello scautismo, su basi cristiane e in un contesto europeo.
La loro visione? Una vera fratellanza europea.
Alcune frasi, tratte da un numero della rivista di quegli anni, ci fanno comprendere meglio lo spirito di questi giovani Capi: «… Alcuni ragazzi e alcune ragazze si sono detti che era impossibile ricominciare ogni 20 anni a battersi gli uni contro gli altri, mentre milioni di orfani aspettano il loro turno per partire per una nuova guerra… Di fronte ai mucchi di cadaveri portati dalle ruspe, alle città rase al suolo, ai bambini bruciati dal napalm… qualche cosa si è ribellata in noi ed ha detto “Basta!” (…) Ci siamo impegnati con tutte le nostre forze in questa battaglia contro coloro che vogliono seminare in noi la diffidenza e l’odio. (…) Solamente con il nostro sorriso, con le nostre mani aperte e il poco che possediamo, un cuore di esseri umani liberi e leali, siamo andati verso gli altri, accettando la stessa croce rossa caricata da un giglio d’oro. (…) Allora, riformati, ortodossi, cattolici, abbiamo voluto solo ricordarci che Cristo è morto per tutti… e abbiamo voluto vedere nell’altro solo il cristiano, l’uomo che Dio ama. E al di sopra delle divisioni degli uomini abbiamo, per questo, voluto essere Scouts d’Europa…»
Lo scorso weekend il Consiglio Nazionale italiano si è unito in preghiera insieme alle Associazioni appartenenti alla Uigse-Fse (Unione Internazionale delle Guide e Scouts d’Europa – Federazione dello Scautismo Europeo) per affidare a Maria la fine della guerra e chiedere alla nostra Mamma del Cielo di vegliare e sostenere i nostri fratelli e sorelle nello scautismo delle Associazioni ucraina, russa e bielorussa nella loro fondamentale opera di testimonianza di vera amicizia e solidarietà reciproca, incarnazione perfetta della missione evangelica che è alla base della nascita della nostra Unione.”
“ In 1956, Cologne is a city in total reconstruction. The scars of World War II aren’t yet healed when Europe starts dividing again: East against West.
In response to the huge damage caused by wars and ideologies, how can one restore young people’s trust in the future?
How to save this great European heritage, buried under the rubble? How to put it back in the hands of youth in search of roots and a future? Concerned about these issues, about thirty young people gathered in Cologne. Among them are Catholics, Protestants and one Orthodox.
For them, it is urgent to place God back in the center of a European project.
Therefore, they founded the Federation of European Scouting (FSE), an international brotherhood the primary purpose of which is to educate youth by practising Scouting, ad desigend by Baden-Powell, on Christian bases within a European framework.
Their vision? A true European brotherhood. A few sentences, taken from an issue of the magazine of those years, give us a better understanding of the spirit of these young Leaders: “… Some boys and some girls said to themselves that it was impossible to start again every 20 years to fight against each other, while millions of orphans are waiting for their turn to leave for a new war… Faced with piles of corpses brought by bulldozers, cities razed to the ground, children burned by napalm… something rebelled in us and said “Enough!” (…) We have committed ourselves with all our strength in this battle against those who want to sow mistrust and hatred in us. (…) Only with our smile, with our open hands and the little we possess, a heart of free and loyal human beings, did we go towards others, accepting the same red cross loaded with a golden lily. (…) So, Reformed, Orthodox, Catholics, we only wanted to remember that Christ died for all… and we wanted to see in the other only the Christian, the man whom God loves. And above the divisions of men, we wanted to be Scouts of Europe…”. Last weekend the Italian National Council joined in prayer together with the Associations belonging to the UIGSE-FSE (International Union of Guides and Scouts of Europe – Federation of European Scouting) to entrust to Mary the end of the war and ask our Mother in Heaven to watch over and support our brothers and sisters in Scouting of the Ukrainian, Russian and Belorussian Associations in their fundamental work of witnessing true friendship and mutual solidarity, perfect embodiment of the evangelical mission that is the basis of the birth of our Union.”
